Groups v. donations from organizations - how do you handle federations and foundation gift tracking in ODB?

Hi!

I'm new so if I have missed this and it's a FAQ, I apologize!

In addition to individual donors, our organization occasionally receives gifts from businesses, and also, we've received donations through a federated campaign before, and a foundation grant or sponsorship or two. I don't see how to track these using ODB. I'm using version 1.0.

I'm also trying to figure out whether I can still import past payments (extracted to a .csv file) to ODB records in 1.0. I didn't see a field for record ID on import in 1.0. I imported the old record IDs into the Comments field, is that going to be of any use?

And if there is anyone in the Del/Mar/Va/DC area who is using ODB, hey, I'd be thrilled to chat with you occasionally offline!

Best,

hi Linda --
There is not a single way to handle federated campaign gifts -- the question I guess is how you plan to acknowedge the gifts?
Yes you can import past payments, but you will need to move the old record IDs, using ms-access or open office, to the OldID field.

Gifts from organizations are handled either by:
a) just entering organizational contacts in the people area (90% of ODB users do this) or

b) associating people with the organization, i.e. in the Cont1 field, and then entering the gifts under the person. In version 1.1 you can right-click on the Cont1 or Cont2 buttons to access the payments for a group contact person.

Version 1.1 has enhancements in the user interface for gift import and in the support for using the 'groups' area. The groups-people linkages have some bugs in 1.0.x so I do not recommend using that version.

Thanks!

Thank you Rich. That makes sense - I'm taking approach number 1!
