Please note that there are also several commercial products that may be easier to configure than VNC, which are not free. They are:

In particular, LogMeIn works well through a firewall as it does not require a special "port forwarding" arrangement on your router.

Your info about LogMeIn is not quite accurate. There is a free version that works quite well. While you cannot transfer files with the free version, you can run the remote PC as if you were there, so ODB will work quite easily with it.
